RE: jazz jam, keys
"So, my Jazz-oriented friends on the list here... Is
there an expectation to arrive and call my tunes in
"the right key?" What if ten singers recorded
the song in ten different keys?"
I am with you. there are certainly songs that most
players are accustomed to playing in certain keys, and
some that are particularly hard if you put them in
certain other keys... but for the most part, and
especially for the ones you named, a jazzman worth his
salt ought to be fine playing them in a variety of
keys, IMHO. I am certainly not used to there being
an "expectation" like you mentioned.
Still, it probably wouldn't hurt to explore different
keys for jazz tunes, just to be accomodating to horn
and piano players... certain keys do tend to be better
for jazz.
BTW, in what key were you playing "Wonderful World"?
